Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35 year old female. I have heard that the ketogenic diet may have potential health benefits, such as weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and enhanced mental clarity. I would like to know the answers to the following questions:

  1. Can you provide insights into these potential advantages and the scientific evidence supporting them?
  2. Although there are different types of ketogenic diets, including the standard ketogenic diet, cyclical ketogenic diet, and targeted ketogenic diet, can you explain the differences between these variations and their respective applications?
  3. Are there any potential risks or side effects associated with the ketogenic diet that I should be aware of? How can these risks be mitigated?

I seek guidance on how to implement a ketogenic diet, including the recommended macronutrient ratios, food choices, and portion control. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

You need to understand how the keto diet works, before starting the diet. The body starts using the fat as a source of energy rather than glucose after consuming the keto diet. This switch may take two to three days and can make your head heavy. Your keto diet may break if carbohydrates are consumed more than recommended and can impact your body negatively. The diet is customized to weight, height, and age.

Following are the guidelines for a ketogenic diet.

  1. Do not consume any grains like wheat, rice, bread, or oats.
  2. Avoid free sugars like sugar, fruits, colas, candies, dates, and figs.
  3. Do not take starchy vegetables in the form of potatoes, beetroot, carrots, radishes, and peas.
  4. All green leafy vegetables can be consumed.
  5. Instead of dal or pulses, take 100 grams of sprouted moong daily.
  6. Take good fat in the diet in the form of olive oil, virgin coconut oil, and ghee(1 tablespoon per day).
  7. Avoid consuming butter.
  8. Cheese cubes can be preferred two to three times a week.
  9. Nuts, black olives, and cheese can be preferred as midmeals or snacks.
  10. For protein sources: paneer, egg whites, chicken, or fish can be taken.
  11. On a ketogenic diet, it is not advisable to skip the diet, as the body will no longer be in ketosis.
  12. Take a tablet of multivitamins every day after breakfast, to maintain energy levels.
  13. It is very important to hydrate yourself well on a ketogenic diet, thus consume about three to four liters of fluids daily.
  14. Clear liquids such as green tea, black coffee, bulletproof coffee, and lemon water can be taken.
  15. Instead of normal milk and curd, fat cream and hung curd made of high-fat milk or greek yogurt can be used.

I suggest you consult a specialist, talk to them, get detailed calculations for your diet done, and take the medications with their consent.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
