How to overcome exercise addiction while maintaining a healthy level of physical activity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old male and a dedicated athlete who exercises four times a day. I have become concerned about my exercise addiction. How can I overcome this addiction while maintaining a healthy level of physical activity? Furthermore, I am interested in using an activity tracker to monitor my exercise routine. Can you recommend effective ways to track my activity without causing my exercise addiction?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Exercising is not a bad addiction but yes excessive workouts lead to overtraining syndrome and fatigue which leads to muscle loss and injury. Hence, you need to be careful about the duration and frequency of exercising per week. You can keep a reminder check on your phone or exercise track app installed that will limit your workout numbers. Also, keep yourself hydrated enough while exercising and follow a proper pre and post-workout meal plan to prevent muscle loss and good recovery.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
