What lifestyle changes help achieve sustainable weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old woman struggling with obesity. My BMI is 32, and I have tried various diets without success. I am worried about developing health issues like diabetes or heart disease. What lifestyle changes do you recommend for sustainable weight loss? Are there any medications that could help? I am also considering bariatric surgery - would I be a good candidate? My goal is to lose 50 pounds and improve my overall health. Any advice on setting realistic goals and staying motivated would be greatly appreciated.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Obesity is a multifaceted disease pattern that must be catered to with a multidisciplinary approach. First of all, some important things to keep in mind are:

  1. Follow a strict diet.

  2. Include physical activity on a regular basis.

  3. Include breathing exercises daily.

  4. Avoid junk and oily foods as much as possible.

  5. Maintain a regular sleep-wake pattern.

  6. Do not go for high-intensity activities at first.

Along with all the above-mentioned pointers, have a stress-free life by inculcating relaxation techniques and yoga if possible. Mostly, low-intensity, non-weight-bearing exercises should be initiated and then modified according to the body's response. Gradually add moderate intensity and then go for high-intensity activities when in progression. You can choose group sessions over one-on-one to stay motivated while looking at others and interacting with them. Try to watch some motivating videos or try to communicate with a coach to discuss daily usage and calorie expenditure. Include more home-cooked foods with more heart-healthy foods. Staying motivated with mirror therapy will be of great help.

I hope this information helps you.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
