Do strength training and aerobic exercises aid in weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have gained some weight recently but have lost over 30 pounds through strength training and aerobic exercise. Should strength training always be included in an ideal exercise routine? I have heard that aerobic exercise is also important. Which is better for losing weight, strength training or aerobic exercise? Should I be doing both? Is strength training alone sufficient to maintain weight loss? How often should I be doing aerobic exercise? Does adding aerobic exercise help with losing weight faster? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for reaching out.

Both strength training (builds muscle and boosts metabolism through resistance exercises) and aerobic exercise (improves cardiovascular health and burns calories by increasing heart rate and breathing) can be effective for weight management. I suggest the following:

  1. Start with basic, low-intensity aerobic activities, and once you are comfortable, incorporate strength training.

  2. Aerobic exercises increase your body’s oxygen levels, aiding weight management. It is essential to vary your workouts and adjust according to your performance level.

  3. Aim for 35 to 45 minutes of exercise, gradually increasing the duration.

  4. Exercising four to five times a week is beneficial for weight management, and light activities during rest periods can also help.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
