Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently came across information about synbiotics and their impact on gut microbiota in a Lancet infectious diseases article. Could you provide an in-depth explanation of synbiotics and their role in promoting gut health? I am particularly interested in understanding the differences between prebiotics and probiotics and how they contribute to a balanced gut microbiota. I am also interested to know practical ways to incorporate it into my diet. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Synbiotics are a blend of pre and probiotics. Probiotics are formulations that contain live colonies of microflora that are found in the gut. These are beneficial for those who are super deficient in the gut microbiome. Whereas prebiotic formulations do not have any live bacteria, they help in the rapid proliferation of existing flora in the gut. Synbiotics are for those who are not sure what to take. Natural ways to increase the gut flora are:

1. Increase the intake of naturally fermented foods - homemade fresh yogurt, un-preserved pickles, sourdough, homemade cheese, and more.

2. Have more foods with indigestible fiber, such as whole-wheat flour, wheat bran, nuts, broccoli, cauliflower, and green beans.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
