Mao Inhibitor

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO) inhibitors are a group of antidepressants that treat depression. They help ease depression by changing levels of brain chemicals (serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) called neurotransmitters. They inhibit an enzyme called monoamine oxidase, which breaks down norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, allowing neurotransmitters to remain in the brain, thus improving mood through improved brain cell communication. Common side effects of MAO inhibitors include headache, dry mouth, dizziness, blurred vision, high blood pressure, muscle cramps, low sex drive, weight gain, blurred vision, nausea, diarrhea, and skin irritations. While taking MAO inhibitors, diet restrictions and avoiding other antidepressants are necessary as they can cause high blood pressure and other medical problems.
