Hello doctor,

My stomach circumference has increased by 1.5 inches and my weight by four kilograms. Can you tell me how to reduce both?

I read your query and can understand your concern.

It is a common problem for everyone, but we can work out to control weight. I suggest you do sixteen hours fasting. Eat dinner before 7.30 pm. Then you should not eat any solid food or snacks. The following day, after brushing, you can have only fruit juices, water, or dry grapes as breakfast. Do not take anything else. Eat lunch after 11.30 am. This is the best practice to spend stored energy from the body. For breakfast have water, fruits (dry grapes, banana), fruit juices (any fruit), vegetable juices (cucumber, pumpkin, bottle gourd, etc.) are advisable. Lemon juice, honey, and warm water is also the best choice. You can have lunch as you wish. For dinner (strictly before 7.30 pm), preferably you can have millet-based diets. You will find many recipes on the internet. If you eat millet at lunch and dinner, that is excellent. In this practice, you will reduce the usage of rice or wheat. While consuming lunch and dinner, fill the stomach with 50 % vegetables (fry or any type). The remaining 25 % are buttermilk, rasam, or sambar (Indian soup) and only 25% will be millet (wheat or rice). If you feel hungry, eat banana fruit, dry grapes, or any fruit, water. Do not take any other diets.

Practice pranayama on empty stomach (morning and evening before food). Yoga (stretching poses, twisting poses) and jogging, brisk walking for a minimum of two kilometers (one kilometer up and one down). This walk is good if it is done after 30 minutes to one hour of dinner. Skipping and cycling are also good. Anyone can do it, but sustainability is essential. I expect you to give feedback after two or three weeks of starting this regimen. If you join your family members or friends in this activity, that would be encouraging and sustainable.

Thank you for the reply.

I follow your advice and indeed it is right and is effective. But there has been a profusion of diets offered. Allopathy has some bullet treatments, but they leave one with the girth intact but weight down and a sickly appearance. I have been told that ayurveda can bring the circumference down without painful dieting. Kindly suggest me, doctor.

Many people do advertisements for weight reduction products. But the drawback is they are temporary. Within a few months, the weight will come back again. The products are costly, and we do know the side effects if used in the long term. As you know, reducing the intake and spending more energy are our two options. These can be done without drugs or with drugs. If you use drugs or supplements, it has unwanted side effects. The regimen given by me is the simplest one that can be practiced at home. But, the family members should support you by preparing the said recipes. Do not start everything at a time. First, you follow breakfast habits. After a week, follow dinner. Like that, one by one, you follow the whole regimen. It is effective and can prevent many metabolic diseases (diabetes and cardiac diseases) on a long-term basis. You may join a regular weight reduction program if you have a yoga facility near your living place. This will ensure that you undergo the regimen and do yoga practice regularly.
