Crackles

Crackles or rales are heard when excess fluid accumulates in the airway. It may be due to lung infection or heart problems. A crackle occurs when a small airway breaks after colliding with the secretions in the airway during inspiration or lack of air in the airway during expiration. Crackles are more common during inspiration than during expiration. Crackles are discontinuous and high-pitched.
