I have a tingling in my fingers and palm. What can help me?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old. I have slight tingling in my left hand, sometimes extending to my arm and fingers, but it is not continuous.

About two months ago, I felt a burning sensation in my spine and neck that lasted for four to five days. After that, I started having mild tingling. Sometimes I do not feel any tingling at all.

I have long sitting hours because I need to watch lectures for exams. I started my exam preparation journey two months ago, and since then, I have been sitting for long periods.

The tingling in my left hand is mild and not continuous. Occasionally, I feel a slight tingling in my fingers and palm. When I stretch my hand around the shoulder area or slightly bend my hand downward, I notice tingling in my fingers.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thank you for sharing your queries with me. I have gone through the information provided here.

Your age is 19, very young, your height and weight and BMI (body mass index) are within normal limits, you have mentioned that you have long sitting hours, maybe any occupation or learning related work, you may be sitting long time, which may cause tingling numbness and burning sensation sometimes.

There are two possibilities may be possible causes for your problems: one is that continuously sitting in a posture may lead to continuous pressure on nerve could lead to pain, and the other is that all complaints may be a deficiency of vitamin B12, which is essential for nerve health, it can be resolved with intake of good vegetables intake, and consuming vitamin B12 tablets.

Second is setting a good posture by making adjustments to chairs and tables, by sitting nearer to the table, and avoiding the use of continuous use of a mobile. and do the stretching of all upper extremity muscles for improving flexibility, which decreases the pressure on nerves, which will be very helpful.

I suggest you get an X-ray and an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan done.

You can manage your condition with physiotherapy and improvement in posture.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
