Hi doctor,

I am a 28-year-old female. I am a nurse and frequently work night shifts. I am trying hard to incorporate sports into my life. I usually swim, and I need to work harder at swimming to lose the extra weight. I gained weight because of my sedentary lifestyle. Will it be okay to swim after a 12-hour shift?

Please advise.

Swimming is indeed the best exercise for you. I always recommend that my patients engage in swimming, especially after long hours of stressful work, as it helps the body relax. It is perfectly fine to swim after your night shift. However, I advise you to ensure you get enough sleep afterward and aim for six to seven hours. I noticed you are trying to lose weight, but based on your BMI (body mass index), your weight is actually ideal. Please continue to eat normally, as your body needs it, especially since you often work stressful night shifts. Just avoid heavy meals after 7 PM, and you should not gain weight.
