Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am interested in understanding the role of sulforaphane as an antioxidant in broccoli and its impact on overall health. Considering my nutritional needs as an athlete, can you provide personalized recommendations on incorporating more sulforaphane-rich foods into my diet? Additionally, are there other antioxidant-rich foods that synergize well with broccoli to enhance the overall nutritional value of my meals?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Yes, Sulforaphane phytochemical is an antioxidant that attacks free radicals. High free radicals affect cell membranes and affect healthy cells. The sources of free radicals include pollution, UV (ultraviolet) rays, and food additives. Sulforaphane phytochemical helps in reducing all inflammation caused by these factors.
It can be obtained from all cruciferous vegetables like kale, cauliflower, or kohlrabi, with broccoli being the best source. Broccoli sprouts may be up to 25 times more potent than regular raw broccoli. Heating broccoli may deactivate the enzyme that produces sulforaphane, so it is preferable to steam or saute it.
Additionally, it is a good source of fiber and easy to digest. You can easily have 1.79 ounces to 2.86 ounces daily if you do not have thyroid issues.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
