Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My brother is 25 years old and lost almost 22 kilograms on a ketogenic diet in two months. Is it normal to lose this much weight in just two months? Can weight loss be due to any other illnesses which go undermined? Even if we stop ketogenic diet then, will he be able to maintain his current weight?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for asking the question. See, I have seen many people reduce weight, but it should be gradual; sudden weight loss can indicate systemic illness. Five kilogram per month is the average speed of reducing weight. Even if you stop taking a ketogenic diet, you can maintain a normal weight but need to decrease diet intake and increase energy expenditure. I hope you are satisfied with the answer.

Feel free to ask again.

Thanks.
