Are repeated washing of hands with organizing, checking, and counting things a sign of OCD?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female and I think I might have OCD. I do not like touching things such as door knobs that could be contaminated. I like to wash my hands a lot. I also like to organize, check, and count things. If I hit my leg with my right hand accidentally, I have to touch it with my left hand. When I eat I want to have equal amounts of food on both sides of my mouth.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation. I understand that you feel concerned about having symptoms of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). There is a difference between when you like to do something and when you get disturbed by something. In OCD, there are intrusive thoughts such as "this thing is contaminated". These thoughts are so disturbing and produce extreme amounts of anxiety. Therefore the person gets engaged in compulsive behaviors such as washing hands and checking and organizing things repeatedly. If you are suffering from a similar condition then I suggest you go to a psychologist for your complete assessment and psychotherapy. If you are not disturbed by these symptoms and just like doing these kinds of stuff, it might not be OCD. In either case, you can consult a psychologist, so you can get confirmation through the results of standardized tools to diagnose your condition. I hope this has helps you.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
