How can I overcome obesity with diet and exercise?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend was overweight for a long time, and she lost a lot of weight using Semaglutide, which I think is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide one) receptor agonist. But then she gained all the weight back. I do not understand why it is so hard to keep the weight off. She thought it would be easier, but I guess obesity is really hard to overcome. Her weight keeps going up and down like a rollercoaster. She is thinking about trying a new diet, but I told her she should see a doctor to understand why this happens. I heard that Semaglutide is good for obesity, but maybe it is not a permanent solution. She is not sure if she should try it again or try something new. Could it be related to her metabolism or something? I am confused about what advice to give her.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Obesity is a common problem that many people face, and it should be managed with a comprehensive approach. Here are some key steps to help manage obesity:

  1. Follow a balanced diet: Eat a diet rich in protein and low in carbohydrates, and avoid fats.

  2. Eat five small meals a day: Include breakfast, brunch, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner.

  3. Pre and post-workout meals: Make sure to have meals before and after workouts for better results.

  4. Stay hydrated: Proper hydration helps your muscles function well.

  5. Make lifestyle changes: Take small steps every day to be mindful of what you eat.

  6. Exercise regularly: Following a consistent workout routine can give faster results.

  7. Start with low-impact activities: Begin with mat exercises and stretches.

  8. Increase intensity gradually: As your body adjusts, you can increase repetitions or intensity.

  9. Go slow: Take your time to improve oxygen flow in the body, which helps boost metabolism.
