General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is a drug group used for reversible loss of consciousness of the patient for a painless experience for a certain period for surgical procedures by anesthesiologists. Breathable and injectable anesthesia are available. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, sore throat, dizziness, confusion, difficulty passing urine, etc. The first general anesthesia used was diethyl ether by Crawford Long.

Do I have to stop taking MAO inhibitor before my L3, and L4 spinal surgery?

Query: Hello doctor, I am 79 years old. I am having spinal surgery on L4 and L3 next month. I have been on 90 mg of Nardil,an MAOI, for the last 32 years.
