What is the management of chondromalacia patella?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My knee pain started five months ago. Before that, I had been doing high-impact cardio daily for 10 to 15 years with no issues. After the knee pain began, I started experiencing pain in my glutes, hamstrings, quads, and lower back. I have chondromalacia patella in my knees. The pain initially improved with physiotherapy, but it returned with activity. I was an athlete, exercising daily for ten years. Whenever I walk for exercise, my knees hurt. When I do low-impact cardio, my glutes, hamstrings, quads, and lower back feel tight, stiff, and painful. I have a history of low protein intake and iron deficiency. I am now taking iron and protein supplements. My current medications include Thyroxine and iron.

Kindly provide your guidance.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

As you are aware, you have chondromalacia patella. This condition requires a specific rehabilitation program for recovery and, if needed, other treatment options for pain relief. The rehabilitation plan should be based on the current strength levels of your lower body. However, I suggest you follow the below-mentioned exercises:

  1. Stretch your hip flexors, quadriceps, and calves.

  2. Strengthen your gluteus muscles and hamstrings.

  3. These measures should help provide pain relief.

Be cautious with the exercises you do in the gym, especially regarding your form. It is important to avoid putting additional load on the knees. A simple way to ensure this is to make sure you do not put weight on the toes of your feet. Avoid any exercises that cause pain during or after the activity. Choose those exercises that do not hurt and help you recover.

I hope this has helped you.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
