Can excessive protein cause bloating?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been losing weight lately and I used to eat a lot of protein, but only from vegetarian sources, and sometimes I eat eggs. Now, I am dealing with severe bloating and trying to figure out which food might be causing it. I know weight loss can sometimes lead to issues like this. Could this be related to obesity or maybe lack of exercise? I am not sure if the type of protein I am eating is the problem. Can anyone help me understand how to find the food that is causing the bloating? I am looking for simple advice that anyone can understand. I am a 53-year-old male.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

The most common reason for bloating is having a lot of gas in your gut. This can be caused by some food and drinks, such as some vegetables and fizzy drinks, or by swallowing air when you eat. It can also be caused by a problem with your digestion, such as constipation. In addition to eating enough fiber and drinking enough water, regular exercise with a focus on core strength can help keep the bloat at bay. Not only that, but exercise helps to prevent water retention, which keeps your bowels moving and keeps gas from building up in your large intestine. Fast bloating relief includes-

  1. Tea- Peppermint, ginger, and chamomile all have anti-bloating properties.

  2. Over-the-counter medications. Certain over-the-counter medications help to temporarily relieve bloating.

  3. Heat: Use a warm compress, a hot water bottle, or a heating pad.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
