Q. What should be done to stop falling asleep frequently?

Hello doctor,

I always feel sleepy despite sleeping for eight to nine hours. I cannot concentrate on my studies, and my performance has been affected. My grades have gone down, and I am scared that my grades will decline my career. What should I do to stop myself from falling asleep frequently?

  2. Are there any lifestyle changes or relationship issues?

I suggest you consult a sleep specialist and take a sleep questionnaire and test. Also, rule out psychological causes of hypersomnia by assessing for triggers, and stressors, as by-products of sleeping too much can lead to anxiety and depression. A follow-up session is necessary if the issues are persistent.

Also, meanwhile, follow simple sleep hygiene.

  1. Wake up at a set time and go to bed at the same time every day.
  2. Have a fresh and clean sleeping space.
  3. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine.
  4. Eat healthy food and exercise well.
  5. Exercise can stimulate hormones and trigger rest and digestion patterns.
