  • Many chemical reactions (oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis, hydration, or dehalogenation) are carried out by CYP450 enzymes to add a reactive group (hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amino) to a toxin.

  • Vegetables like Spanish black radish, broccoli (frozen or raw), cauliflower, fresh daikon radish sprouts, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts stimulate CYP450 enzymes.

  • As a result of this reaction, a reactive site on the transformed toxin is formed.

  • This site is similar to reactive oxygen species (ROS) in that it can easily bind to other molecules such as DNA and proteins.

  • Toxin molecules are converted into reactive activated toxins during phase I, generating free radicals.

  • Because the reactive activated toxins are more toxic than the parent toxin compounds, they must be neutralized as soon as possible.

  • The following nutrients have antioxidant properties and may help to mitigate oxidative stress caused by phase I enzyme activity:

a. Carotenes (vitamin A).

b. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C).

c. Tocopherols (vitamin E) and selenium.

d. Copper, zinc, and manganese.

e. Coenzyme Q10.

f. Thiols (found in garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables).

g. Silymarin.

h. Bioflavonoids and polyphenols.

2. Detox Phase II - Conjugation:

  • Phase I activation produces reactive substituents that are frequently more reactive — and potentially more toxic — than the parent molecule.

  • Ideally, these reactive compounds should be converted to a non-toxic, water-soluble molecule as soon as possible at the point of manufacture.

  • Phase II conjugation enzymes, which include many enzyme superfamilies, convert reactive substituents to water-soluble molecules:

1) Sulfotransferases (SULT).

2) UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGT).

3) Glutathione S-transferases (GST).

4) N-acetyltransferases (NAT).

  • Conjugation reactions involve not only the water-soluble fraction attached to the toxin, such as sulfate in hydroxylation or glucuronic acid in glucuronidation but also an amount of energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

  • Phase II reactions require an excess supply of co-factor and energy replacement. A variety of nutrients and micronutrients may assist in Phase II responses.

3. Detox Phase III - Transport:

  • Phase III, the elimination phase, consists of cytoplasmic membrane proteins that transport and improve the cell's surface.

  • Mostly phase III proteins are energy-dependent and obtain their energy from ATP hydrolysis.

  • Toxins that have been processed and are water-soluble are exported from the cell to circulation for eventual elimination by the kidneys.

  • Urine alkalinization, for example, increases the elimination of methyl chlorophenoxyproprionic (MCPP) acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in the urine.

  • In case of acute poisoning or toxin overdose, alkalinizing urine to a pH of 7.5 or higher is a technique for increased toxin removal in critical medical situations.

  • Alkaline minerals found in fruits and vegetables and plant-based dietary supplements have been shown in clinical studies to increase urinary pH.
