How to reduce lower body fat without losing upper body fat?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 5 feet 2 inches and my weight is 116 pounds. My lower body parts are so much larger than my upper body parts. I am on a diet and I keep losing fat from my upper part, what should I do?

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Each one of us has a different body composition and looks different. The fat distribution in the body is unique to each individual. When you try to lose weight, you will lose weight evenly from all parts of your body. There is no way to lose weight only from the lower part of your body. Some exercises may help you to tone your lower body, but you cannot selectively lose weight from just your lower body. If you have lost fat from your upper body, I am sure you have lost fat from your lower body too. I suggest you take circumferential measurements of your body at various levels, like chest, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, calf muscles, arms, and forearms. Take these measurements once in two to three weeks and chart your numbers. You will definitely see a difference over the course of time.

But remember, your body contour is unique to you, and you may not be able to change that. It is very important for every person to love their own body. Work towards improving your body, but do not be obsessed with a particular type of body composition. Every person is beautiful in a different way.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
