Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I love drinking chicken soup. Does it have any psychological and emotional benefits during illness? Are there any other comfort foods I can eat to soothe both body and mind during sickness?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, something hot and nutritious during cold makes us feel good after consuming because the body is struggling to manage body temperature. There are so many food that helps.

  1. Include plenty of vitamin C-rich foods that have anti-oxidant properties such as amla, colored peppers, citrus fruits, guava, and broccoli.
  2. Consume a lot of ginger and garlic in soups or teas. These have anti-viral properties. Ginger turmeric water or tea is a great option. Raw garlic or ginger with honey can soothe a sore throat.
  3. Fresh or dry turmeric has curcumin which is a great antibiotic and antiseptic. Consume turmeric milk or tea with a pinch of pepper.
  4. A concoction of tulsi, ginger, peppercorn, and cloves, boiled with water, and adding pure honey is a good option to boost immunity.
  5. Fermented foods such as homemade curd, kimchi, and pickled veggies provide probiotics, strengthening our gut and boosting immunity.
  6. Cut down on foods and drinks laden with sugar as sugars destroy the body's ability to fight infections.
  7. Last but not least, stay well hydrated with water, detox waters, and soups as they make your body strong to ward off infection and mood enhance.

I hope this helps.
