What are the protocols of a Mediterranean diet, and what are its benefits?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My friend said he was following a Mediterranean diet. I did not ask him for what, as he was bragging while speaking about it, so I did not bother. However, I can see he has become fit and has glowing skin. Can you let me know about the Mediterranean diet and its benefits? I also would love to follow and understand its benefits. Kindly help me.

Hi, Welcome to icliniq.com.

There is no one strict version of this diet, nor does it require calorie counting or even portion measurements. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of eating fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. It also includes using extra-virgin olive oil, lean meats, fish, and red wine in moderation. It also encourages limiting red meat, processed foods, dairy, and sweets. The Mediterranean diet remains a popular way of eating because it is easy to follow and successfully contributes to optimal health and longevity. In fact, the Mediterranean diet may help prevent weight gain, type II diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and certain cancers. It also helps preserve cognitive function with age and promotes gut health. I hope this has helped you.
