Hi doctor,

My mother has trouble sleeping. Diabetes runs in my family. My grandmother passed away 12 years ago. My father spent a lot of money on her treatment during that period, but unfortunately, she passed away. Due to this, my father was in shock. Also, he had diabetes and passed away 11 years back. My mother was in her mid-forties when my father passed away. Now she has 50 crossed years. The problem with my mother is that she has been suffering from sleeping disorders for the past four years. She is not able to sleep at night. However, if we talk about her medical conditions, she is fit and fine. She wakes up daily at 5:00 AM, goes for a walk, and then she engages in daily activities. Her blood pressure is normal, and she does not have diabetes or cardiac problems.

The other fact is that if I do not sleep at night, the next day, I will have headaches the whole day, which I think most individuals encounter. But surprisingly, my mother did not encounter any problems, and she was fine all day. Also, she is not sleeping during the daytime, and at night we usually go to bed at 10:00 PM, but she sleeps around 2:00 AM daily. So I think she can have health problems in the future because of her unusual sleeping habits. What to do?

Kindly give your suggestions.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand that you feel concerned about your mother's sleep pattern. As you have already mentioned, your mother sleeps for less time, goes to bed at 2:00 AM, and wakes up at 5:00 AM. There are two possibilities; if she wakes up fresh, feels that her sleep is enough to get rested, and she does not have any problematic concerns, then no worries, she is all right.

On the other hand, if she sleeps for a lesser time and feels disturbed, like if she feels that she has not had enough sleep, is tired, not waking up fresh, or has any other disturbing concerns, In that case, I suggest you to consult a psychologist in person for relaxation exercises or treatment.

I hope this was helpful.

Kindly follow up for more queries.
