How long can someone be on a ketogenic diet?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 23-year-old and have been on a ketogenic diet for the past three months. I have also lost around 17 lbs. How long should I follow the ketogenic diet? My target is to lose 33 lbs. After reaching the target, if I stop following the diet, will I gain weight again, or will I remain the same? I need your opinion on this?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

A person can be on a ketogenic diet for a maximum of three months continuously, not more than that. You need to discontinue it after 90 days and follow a high fiber, low-fat diet as a maintenance diet post ketogenic diet.

Thank you.
