Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Six years ago, I had a small dry skin patch on my lower lip with a scab on my lip border. I ignored the same, but one year later I again had the same problem where my lower lip skin got sore with a scab being formed underneath it (as I keep a beard it goes unnoticed), which after getting dry went off. It again happened in that same year and this time I went to a dermatologist who told me that it is being caused by Herpes simplex virus and is a cold sore or a fever blister and gave me Acyclovir medicine for one week. I was normal for two months but had a stomach infection and fever three days back and as soon as it ended, I again had this cold sore or fever blister on my lower lip in the same area, and this time I got myself tested for Herpes virus before having any medicine. All my tests came negative in relation to Herpes simplex virus and my blood test was purely normal and as well as my urine report. But after consulting a few doctors they all say that it is indeed Herpes on my lower lip as report can sometimes be false and virus may be unnoticed. I also think that I am having recurrent cold sores caused by Herpes simplex virus. Since they say it cannot be treated my query to you is what all-natural foods or ayurvedic herbs should I consume in order to deal with this problem and to prevent the same. What are the natural things that can boost my immune system to fight off any virus in the future? Are there any things that I should abstain from eating? Please tell me the changes I should make in my diet and any natural way of fighting the problem.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your lesion appears during summer as well as in the winter season. Also, the viral tests showed negative. So, according to naturopathy or traditional medicines, it may occur during extreme climates or during the period when the climate gets changed from one to another. The lips are the mucocutaneous junction, thus it reacts to body heat or cold as well as external heat or cold. Thus, the following are my suggestions-

a) You need to maintain a constant temperature in lips (inside the body and the outside environment) as well as maintain hygiene to prevent viral infection.

b) Do not take extremely hot foods (chicken, chilly, etc, and avoid alcohol or smoking) as well as extremely cold foods (ice cream). That may aggravate your condition. Better use medium types of foods or drinks.

c) In cooking, always use more turmeric powder, coriander powder, and jeera powder to balance your tridhoshas.

d) Consume more mucocutaneous protective types of foods such as curd, buttermilk, vitamin-rich vegetables or fruits, etc.

e) Take a tablet of Riboflavin (vitamin B2). But this tablet is 20. Take one daily at night regularly. Take two tablets in the morning and two at night if the lesion is present. This is the vitamin that protects your lips.

f) Turmeric powder is the best immune booster for you. One gram (one small spoon) can be mixed with honey and taken before bed. Or mix in milk and drink at night. This daily practice is enough.

g) Tulsi, Coleus aromaticus, and Malabar spinach are the other three herbals that fight against repeated viral infections and improve immunity specifically against viruses. The last one is specific to protect your mucocutaneous junction like lips. Thus, I suggest you use the last one at least three days a week in cooking. You can see many recipes on the internet. Tulsi and Coleus can be added while making soups, sambar, rasam, or any other salads.

h) You can also use Aloe vera-based lip gloss, lipstick, or cream on the lips.

Thank you.
