How does exercise benefit cancer survivors?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a cancer survivor seeking to incorporate exercise into my daily routine to support my recovery and overall well-being. I understand that exercise can help manage the side effects of cancer treatment and improve quality of life. Could you provide insights into the role of exercise in oncology, its impact on cancer outcomes, recommendations for safe and effective exercise programs for survivors, and what things I should consider as I start this journey to better health? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for reaching out, and I understand your concern.

Physiotherapy protocols are always beneficial for cancer patients. I suggest the following.

  1. Sessions should start five to six hours after or the following day, as chemotherapy can weaken you.

  2. Incorporate aerobic activities and mobility exercises into your daily sessions. Balance training and breathing exercises, including deep breathing and meditative techniques, can also be beneficial.

  3. These exercises improve overall health, increase endurance and strength, and enhance nervous system activities.

  4. If you feel dizzy, weak, or experience any other physical or mental symptoms, avoid any activities.

  5. Begin with low-intensity aerobic activities and gradually increase to moderate types at your convenience.

  6. Follow a nutritious diet for better results. Ensure you get all essential nutrients and drink plenty of water.

  7. Daily mobility or active exercises are always good to do.

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
