What are the strategies for office workers to stay active?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

In our company, we are promoting physical activity and exercise for the well-being of our employees, even during work intervals. We want to encourage everyone to get moving, but we are not sure how to make it happen in a way that fits into the workday. Can you suggest a few strategies or activities we could implement at the office to get everyone more active? We are looking for simple, practical ideas that people can easily do without disrupting their workflow too much.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Workplace physical activities are nowadays becoming the most important part of every company's schedule. Basic ergonomic activities not only help in improving the physical aspect but also improve mental well-being. Every two-hour interval exercise break for 15 minutes can be incorporated into staying at the desk itself within the working hours, or one-hour fitness sessions can be arranged for all employees in a day to break the monotony.

Simple but yet very effective strategies are mentioned below:

  1. Head rotation movements (side to side, front and back).

  2. Shoulder shrugging and neck side stretches (right and left).

  3. Hand movements actively, pendulum exercises, making fists, and upward and downward stretches.

  4. Trunk rotation, side arm raises stretches.

  5. Leg extension exercises with seated or standing.

  6. Ankle upward and downward movements.

Along with the above, you can encourage the employees to stand and walk around the office for at least ten minutes without sitting. Stop using your mobile for five minutes, look away from the monitor, and focus on any green objects like trees or plants Eye exercises can be implemented for pain relief. And the biggest health asset is breathing exercises. The normal focused nose and mouth inhalation and exhalation should be included and performed every two hours without fail.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
