Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 42-year-old man dealing with obesity-related joint pain, especially in my knees. My current weight is 280 lbs at five feet. I have heard that losing weight can help alleviate joint pain, but I find it challenging to exercise due to discomfort. Are there low-impact exercises you would suggest? Also, I am curious about the role of inflammation in obesity and joint pain. Are there any specific dietary changes that could help reduce inflammation? Lastly, would you recommend any supplements for joint health while I work on losing weight?
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Obesity-related joint pains take a little more time to subside. So, it is important to set a long-term and short-term goal yourself.
Long-term: For obesity reduction and related complications.
Short term: Reduce the knee pain and swelling.
Short-term goals:
First of all, if the pain is very debilitating, then painkillers and physiotherapy treatment can help. Start some lightweight activities like:
Isometrics for knee pain (straighten up the leg, keep a towel under the knee, and try to press down the towel with the knee without touching it).
Active knee extension and flexion exercises also help reduce pain.
Stretching exercises of the quadriceps and hamstrings also aid.
Along with the above, an anti-inflammatory diet like vegetables and avoiding colds will help.
Keep warm with intake and moist application on the knee.
You can alternate cold and hot pack applications on the knee on a daily basis for pain and swelling reduction.
Long-term goals:
Physical activity.
Diet.
Sleep-wake cycle.
Following the routine regularly with a gradual increase in the intensity of exercises over the course of time is recommended. Try mat exercises like yoga or pilates. A sustained and slow pattern is always good. Start with warm up-conditioning-cool down.
I hope this information helps you.
Revert in case of queries.
Regards.
