Q. What is the diet plan for a 55-year-old diabetic male patient?

Hello doctor,

My father is 55 years old and weigh 70 kg. He is suffering from sugar disease. Please inform the precautions to be taken to maintain the correct sugar levels and please inform the complete diet chart including fruits which are to be avoided or preferred. His normal food is tiffin in the morning, rice with dal curry in the afternoon and roti or bread at night.

Diet prescription is as follows:

  1. Early morning: Luke warm water one glass, one teaspoon methi seeds powder or soaked methi (overnight).
  2. After half an hour: Tea without sugar or black tea or green tea one cup (without sugar).
  3. Breakfast: Upma one plate, one katori skim milk curd or oats with adding vegetables one bowl or sprouts one bowl, one apple.
  4. Mid-morning: One apple or guava or papaya four slices or one pomegranate.
  5. Lunch: Two to three chapatis, one-kilo vegetable, one-kilo dal or skim milk curd, salad one bowl (cabbage salad or cucumber and tomato salad)
  6. Snack: Sprout bhel or boiled chana with adding tomato, onion, cucumber or tea without sugar with two digestive biscuits.
  7. Dinner: Daliya with vegetables or two roti, dal one katori, and vegetables one katori.
  8. Bedtime: Skim milk without sugar one cup or one glass.

Food to be avoided: Banana, custard apple, chiku, sugar and sugar products, jaggery, bakery products, cheese, rice, spicy and oily food, egg yolk, chicken, and mutton.

Food to be included: Green leafy vegetables, sprouts , dals and legumes, flax seeds, methi seeds, paneer, toffu, egg white, etc. If non-vegetarian, non-vegetarian food item should be included only lunch time with lots of salads.
