Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been told that I have a thalassemia minor and I know that I cannot donate blood. I am also a diabetic. Is there anything else I should not do?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Since you have thalassemia, which is one of the blood disorders, along with diabetes, you would not be eligible to donate blood. In conditions like diabetes (an endocrine disorder) and certain blood disorders, donors are usually permanently deferred for safety reasons.
It is important for you to focus on maintaining your blood sugar levels and hemoglobin (Hb) within the recommended range. Also, a BMI of 47 is quite high and needs attention, as it can further impact your overall health.
Here are a few suggestions that may help:
If lifestyle changes are not enough to control your diabetes, medications like Glimepiride (Amaryl) or Metformin Hydrochloride (Fortamet) may be considered, but only after consulting your doctor. Please discuss this with your specialist before starting any medication.
Also, regular monitoring is important. Keep track of your blood sugar levels (fasting and random), hemoglobin levels, and blood pressure. Annual checkups, like an ECG (electrocardiogram) and treadmill test, can also be helpful.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
