Can physical therapy treat ankylosing spondylitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, and I have been wondering if physical therapy will actually help her. I know staying active is important, but will the therapy make things worse or more painful for her? She has a full-time job and a lot on her plate, so I am concerned about how much time she will need to put into it. How often should she go for these sessions? And will the exercises be something she can manage without getting too exhausted or sore? Can physical therapy make a big difference with her condition, and is there anything else she can do to keep things under control without interfering too much with her daily routine?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a condition that might worsen over time. So, arresting the symptoms on time is very important. Physical therapy has already taken the forefront in treating such conditions.

So, starting with physiotherapy sessions is always a good option.

The sessions will include:

  1. Mobilization.

  2. Manipulation.

  3. Passive and active movements.

  4. Exercises with basic movement of joints.

  5. Ultrasonic therapy.

  6. Hot packs.

  7. Home-based exercises as prescribed by the therapist.

The protocol might be changed according to the response of the client.

So, physical therapy sessions provide a structured way of improving the conditions and will help in reducing the ailments by offering clear guidance on things to do and things to avoid for the client.

The exercises can be tailor-made, so they should be performed within the pain-free range to avoid exhaustion. The sessions will include therapies by the expert which will definitely make a difference in the life of the client.

General modifications in lifestyle and how to control the symptoms are also advised by the therapist. Hence, a lot can be achieved through the therapy and it will surely provide a turnover in the daily routine without interfering with the normal schedule.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
