Is lychee a good choice for weight loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am considering incorporating lychee into my diet as part of my weight loss journey, but I am unsure about its impact on weight gain or loss. As someone conscious about their dietary choices, I am interested in understanding how lychee, as a fruit rich in dietary fiber, might contribute to weight management. Can you provide insights into the nutritional benefits of lychee, its role in promoting satiety and aiding weight loss, and any considerations I should keep in mind when incorporating it into my diet?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through you query and understood your concern.

Eating more fruits, including lychees, is a good way to boost weight loss. Lychees are low in calories, contain a lot of water, and give you some fiber, making them particularly good choices.

Whole lychee fruits have been used not only as a food source but also for medicinal purposes. As a traditional Chinese medicine, lychee has been used for centuries to treat stomach ulcers, diabetes, cough, diarrhea, and dyspepsia, as well as to kill intestinal worms.

Lychees contain high sugar content and a glycemic index of 50. Fruits with a glycemic index lower than 55 get digested slowly, allowing a slow release of sugar into the blood. However, eating lychee right after a meal or before going to bed at night might spike your blood sugar levels.

The nutritional profiles of longan and lychee are similar. Both fruits are low in calories and carbs and have zero fat. One ounce of fresh longan has just 17 calories and 4 grams (0.14 ounces) of carbs. One ounce of fresh lychee has 18 calories and 5 grams (0.15 ounces) of carbs.

Lychees are pretty small and contain a lot of water, so you can eat quite a few without adding up a lot of calories or sugar. Eating about 10 lychees, or 100 grams, will give you 66 calories and 15 grams (0.52 ounces) of sugar.

Lychees contain several healthy minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, such as potassium, copper, vitamin C, epicatechin, and rutin. These may help protect against heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Hope it helps.

Thank you.
