How to deal with self-harming thoughts in depression?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I experience moments throughout my week, or my day where something little sets me off and the world around me disappears. I feel numb, to counteract that, I cut myself which most weirdly makes me feel better until it starts to burn again. I am 18 years old and I am a female. I do not know if you need that information but in case you did, there you go. I believe I may be depressed but I do not know how to do anything about it aside from the therapist. I am not financially stable enough to afford a therapist even through my insurance. I once saw a therapist who stopped returning my calls and I honestly am afraid that will happen again. Am I untreatable? So kindly suggest what to do next.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all, I do not think it is only depression as there is ample description in favor of depersonalization and uncontrolled anger. In my opinion, you have poor frustration tolerance and excessive stress which leads to depersonalization and other issues. I understand that the same thing can lead to depression but the symptoms are quite different.

I also like to assure you that the problem is not untreatable and there is good hope for a response with therapy. In case you are not able to afford a local therapist, consider online consultation with me if it is affordable. If not you can describe all your problems in a follow-up query so a diagnosis can be made and a suitable remedy can be suggested.

Thank you.
