Is yogurt advisable for people with thyroid issues?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have bought a new yogurt maker machine. My friends told me that eating probiotic foods can improve my gut health. How can probiotic foods help me achieve this? How do they react in my body? What will happen inside my body after consuming them? I have wheezing issues and tend to catch colds easily due to hypothyroidism, which causes cold intolerance. Can I consume yogurt frequently? My friend told me that eating yogurt is not advisable for people with thyroid issues. Is that true?

Please guide me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You have cold intolerance because of hypothyroidism, a condition in which your body does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Therefore, you will need to fulfill your iodine requirements. Dairy products, green yogurt, any variety of yogurt or curd, or probiotic foods like yogurt can all be helpful in boosting iodine metabolism in the body. So, it is a myth that you should refrain from dairy products. In fact, dairy can fulfill your iodine requirements and would be useful for hypothyroid cases.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Thank you.
