I took Percocet once. Can side effects come back?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

If someone has taken Percocet (5/325) and later switches back to regular Acetaminophen, is there any possibility that the oxycodone component could still get triggered or cause effects again?

I am concerned because I have read that some side effects of Percocet can be long-lasting, even after a single use.

Kindly assist.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Acetaminophen is safe compared to Percocet (Oxycodone and Acetaminophen). A single dose of Percocet never causes permanent side effects. The side effects caused by a single dose (such as loss of appetite and difficulty emptying the bladder) will last only one day.

Once the amount of the drug is excreted from the body (now the drug within the body becomes less gradually), automatically the effect or side effect (mentioned above) must disappear. Only for usage more than three to five days, it may lead to more side effects.

If used for more than 10 days, the permanent side effects may occur. Nothing to worry about, vocal cord swelling. This should appear as early as possible after the drug intake, as it is a drug hypersensitivity reaction. If not occurred, it is not going to happen in the future. Do not worry about Percoset side effects.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
