Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 23-year-old female. I wanted to know about the health benefits of walnuts. Is it a superfood? Can it be included in a regular diet? If so, what is the required amount? What happens if eat more walnuts in a day? I wanted to consume healthy foods to prevent chronic illness and improve my immunity. Is walnut considered an immune booster? What is the best way and time to consume it? I need general information about walnuts and clarification about their consumption. Please help.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Since walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, more so than any other nut, eating them regularly can also help you maintain your heart health and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. The omega-3 fat that comes from plants is known as alpha-linolenic acid, and it is essential to a healthy heart. Walnuts are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, fats, and plant compounds that may help support good physical functioning as you age. Studies have indicated that consuming about a handful of walnuts per day—typically around 28 grams—can be sufficient to reap the cognitive benefits.
Excessive consumption of walnuts may cause diarrhea, bloating, stomach pain, or kidney stones. Due to the phytic acid they contain, too many walnuts may also inhibit the absorption of dietary iron, calcium, and zinc. The recommendation is one ounce (10 to 14) English walnut halves per day or 30 walnuts can be consumed as safe.
People who are allergic to nuts should not eat walnuts. If the person develops a rash or hives or difficulty breathing after eating walnuts, medical attention should be sought.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
