Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My friend was overweight for a long time, and she lost a lot of weight using Semaglutide, which I think is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide one) receptor agonist. But then she gained all the weight back. I do not understand why it is so hard to keep the weight off. She thought it would be easier, but I guess obesity is really hard to overcome. Her weight keeps going up and down like a rollercoaster. She is thinking about trying a new diet, but I told her she should see a doctor to understand why this happens. I heard that Semaglutide is good for obesity, but maybe it is not a permanent solution. She is not sure if she should try it again or try something new. Could it be related to her metabolism or something? I am confused about what advice to give her.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Regarding your questions:
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide one) receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are newer medications that work well for weight loss.
However, these drugs are not a permanent solution for obesity. They can help with weight loss, but they need to be combined with other efforts.
Consistency is key for any weight loss effort, whether through lifestyle changes or medication. Once the target weight loss is achieved, medications can be stopped, but diet and exercise should continue to maintain the results.
Stopping these efforts can lead to overeating and weight gain again.
People who are obese often have a genetic and metabolic makeup that makes it easier for them to gain weight. Therefore, long-term commitment and consistent effort are needed to manage weight effectively.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
