What causes strain and tugging pain in the right knee?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old girl and normally squat reasonably heavy 143 lbs. These past weeks I have been feeling a straining tugging pain coming from my right knee on the inside. I think it is the MCL. It does not cause me any problems in day to day life but hurts a decent amount when I squat even with no weight. I am worried if it is serious. I have been doing no weight this past week and using the band to strengthen my hip flexors and stuff. I am on a cut at the moment so I do not want to be stopping exercise. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your concern. In my opinion, you would have a VMO (vastus medialis oblique) issue which may be tender and stiff since it is involved in the final degree of knee locking and will come into play during locking of the knee. And also when adductors made to get tighten to support the transfer of load on the knee. So do not worry. I recommend you to do:

  1. A lot of icing frequently on the painful area and also over lower part of adductors muscles.
  2. Do good foam rolling over the inner thigh and quads.
  3. Do stretch your hamstring proper as they will also produce similar symptoms also stretch inner thigh and quads muscles.
