Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have been having body image issues after metabolic surgery. I had a gastric sleeve nine months ago and lost 103 pounds (BMI from 46 to 29). Health improvements are amazing but struggling severely with body image and identity. I do not recognize myself in the mirror. My husband says I look great but I see saggy skin and weird proportions. Constantly anxious about regaining weight. I am obsessively weighing foods, checking the scale multiple times daily, and having panic attacks when eating at restaurants. Friends say I have become boring because I only talk about weight and food now. Is this normal or is something wrong with me? When does body image typically stabilize? What psychological support should I seek? Will I ever feel comfortable in this new body?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
What you are experiencing is very common after major weight loss, especially with rapid changes from metabolic surgery. Your brain often takes longer to adjust than your body, leading to body dysmorphia, anxiety, and fear of regain. Therapy, especially with a specialist in bariatric psychology or eating disorders, can help reframe your self-image and ease food-related stress. Support groups and mindful eating practices may also help. With time and the right support, you can find balance and feel comfortable in your new body.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
