What causes sharp pain and a burning sensation in the legs?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a sharp pain in the back of my right thigh yesterday that turned into a burning sensation for about 45 seconds. My leg has throbbed since. Well, today, both legs are tingling as well as my right is still throbbing, but I was wondering what could have caused this or what it could be. I was on a steady walk when this happened at work. I was not lifting, bending, or doing anything. I was just doing a simple slow walk. I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and a slightly bulging disk in my lumbar, and I do not take any medications.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your complaints and understand your concern.

I advise you to take rest, analgesics, anti-inflammatory tablets, and ice packs till the symptoms reduce to some extent. Then get an X-ray and, if necessary, an MRI to determine the exact reason.

In your case, there are 3 possibilities-

  1. Soft tissue inflammation - There may be no bony involvement. Only the soft tissues around the region might be inflamed, causing pain.
  2. Neuropathy - There may be a partial or complete inflammation of the nerves in that region that may be the root cause of such pain.
  3. Disc prolapse - There may be a compressed nerve in the spine somewhere that might be causing radiating pain, with burning in those regions. The possibility of a disc prolapse should be kept in mind.

I suggest you get an X-ray and an MRI to determine the exact cause. Physiotherapy, analgesics, and anti-inflammatory drugs should help till then. Do get back to me after your reports are ready. I hope your question has been answered.

If you have any follow-up queries, feel free to consult me anytime.

Thank you.
