How to overcome unhealthy food cravings?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old woman. I have a few concerns regarding my food habits. I have been having food cravings all the time, and I tend to eat all processed or packaged foods. I am worried my health will be affected over time due to these unwanted foods. How to avoid them? How to prevent such food cravings? What are the healthier alternatives during such cravings? Is it normal to have such cravings? What is causing this? I want to lead a healthy life.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Thank you for posting your query. Ultra-processed foods include pre-packaged soups, sauces, frozen pizza, ready-to-eat meals, and pleasure foods such as hot dogs, sausages, french fries, sodas, store-bought cookies, cakes, candies, doughnuts, ice cream, and many more.

Such foods are typically high in calories, added sugar, and salt and low in fiber, all of which can contribute to cardiometabolic health problems, weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Consuming a higher amount of ultra-processed foods increases the risk of stroke by eight percent compared to a diet with minimal processing. To mitigate this risk and support overall health, it is recommended to include a variety of nutrient-dense foods in your diet. Drink 8 to 12 cups of water daily, and incorporate dark green vegetables three to four times a week. Whole grains should be consumed two to three times daily, while beans and lentils are beneficial to include at least once a week.

Adding foods rich in heart-healthy fats and nutrients is also important. Include avocados, which provide monounsaturated fats, potassium, and other essential vitamins. Berries and brassicas like kale, eggs, nuts, seeds, and oats offer various health benefits. Additionally, nutrient-dense options such as sweet potatoes, salmon, legumes, and quinoa should be part of your diet to enhance overall wellness and potentially reduce stroke risk.

I hope that you got your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Take care.
