Does feeling scorned always mean a psychological problem?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a stupid problem with scorn. The whole time I spit. If I am going to the washroom after going back, I had a shower because I had the toilet bacteria attached to me. I am so irritated.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The problem you have mentioned is related to habit formation. You have developed this habit of scorn or spitting. You want to quit this habit. The treatment for this problem is behaviour modification. You will need therapy sessions to gradually quit the behaviour.

During the session, you will be guided about setting rewards or punishments for your behaviour so you can quit this through modifying your behaviour. Sometimes "use of imagination" helps to quit bad habits. Your therapist or counsellor will guide you after being notified of the frequency and intensity of the problem, so you will be able to gradually reduce your behaviour and then gradually quit.

Another thing you mentioned is taking a shower after you return from the washroom. If this is excessive, like it takes most of your time during the day, e.g., more than one to two hours, and you feel concerned regarding cleanliness, the thoughts are uncontrollable, and you get disturbed by the thoughts, then this could be related to a disorder we call obsessive-compulsive disorder.

You first need to get a detailed assessment by a psychologist, and then you will be suggested treatment.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
