Why does my brain get numb during exams?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am an 18-year-old. I am a student. I do not understand my condition. I have very important exams. I used to get good marks constantly and then everything turned up against me now. I prepare my best, but I do very badly in my exams. I am feeling hopeless. Even after studying for eight hours daily, I am getting very low marks. I am completely puzzled. Why does my brain get numb during exams? I have lost all my confidence. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read and completely understand your issue. You have a problem related to exam anxiety as you lose concentration and your mind gets numb during the exam. I need to ask you a few things. Has this problem only arisen during the exam? Or if you also get disturbed by things such as reading during the class in front of others, public speaking, or other performance-related things, etc? Research supports the treatment for such conditions as social phobia or performance anxiety, which is systematic desensitization in which you will be trained in relaxation exercises along with overcoming your fears related to exams and performance. You will need a few psychotherapy sessions. You can visit any psychotherapist in your nearby area.

Thank you.
