Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been feeling down lately, and I think it might be more than just "the blues".My friend suggested I might have a major depressive disorder, but I am not sure. How do you know if it is actual depression or just a rough patch? I have lost interest in things I used to enjoy and I am always tired, but I can still function at work (barely). Is that typical for depression? I am scared of going on antidepressants because of the side effects, but therapy seems expensive and time-consuming. Are there any other options? I have heard good things about mindfulness and exercise for mental health, could that be enough? I just want to feel like myself again, but I am overwhelmed by all the different approaches to treating depression. What would you recommend?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that depression (a persistent feeling of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities) is a serious mental health condition that can affect anyone. It is not just a rough patch or the blues. If you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed, it is worth exploring further.
Mindfulness and exercise are excellent starting points, as they can help improve mental well-being and reduce symptoms.
Consider taking small steps:
Start with mindfulness exercises, like meditation or deep breathing.
Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, even if it is just a short walk.
Connect with friends and family to build social support.
Keep a journal to track your thoughts and feelings.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
