What are the health benefits of consuming cocoa?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have heard that there might be some health benefits linked to consuming products made from cocoa beans, and I am intrigued to learn more. Can you shed some light on this? I am particularly interested in understanding how enjoying chocolate in moderation could potentially be good for my health. Are there specific nutrients or compounds in cocoa beans that contribute to these benefits?

I have also heard about antioxidants being present in chocolate. Can you explain how antioxidants work and their potential impact on health? Are there other bioactive compounds in chocolate that might have positive effects on the body? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I assume you already know cocoa preparations and forms in which it exists, is processed, and consumed.

I will briefly describe the health benefits of chocolates and their products based on some studies conducted on chocolate products.

  • Cocoa liquor is a complex food and contains many bioactive compounds.
  • Cocoa butter contains significant amounts of fatty acids, whereas the non-fat cocoa solids contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, and polyphenols
  • Due to the usage of cocoa butter, the lipid content of chocolate is relatively high, but one-third of the lipids in cocoa butter is stearic acid, which is believed to be non-atherogenic and to exert a neutral cholesterolemic response in humans.
  • The Bran of the cocoa bean is high in fiber, and its consumption has been shown to improve the Low-density lipoprotein (LDL): High-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio, much of the bran is lost in processing. Still, some fiber remains in commercial cocoa products, though there is a wide range of fiber content.
  • The cocoa bean contains several minerals necessary for vascular function. Dietary magnesium, copper, potassium, and calcium all reduce the risk of hypertension and atherosclerosis.
  • Dark chocolate (70%–85% cocoa) provides 36 mg of magnesium per 100 kcal serving, which is more than three times the amount provided by milk chocolate (11 mg)
  • Other than this there is Iron(Fe), Copper(Cu), and Potassium (K) which have their health benefits if taken in moderation.
  • Antioxidant or Polyphenols content: Cocoa powder contains up to 50 mg of polyphenols per gram. Single servings of cocoa and cocoa products contain more phenolic antioxidants than most foods, and more procyanidins than the average amount consumed by Americans per day.
  • In addition to polyphenols, cocoa contains methylxanthine compounds (predominantly theobromine) about two to three percent by weight. Caffeine is also present in small amounts (0.2%). Theobromine has antioxidant activity similar to caffeine and relatively little stimulating effect on the central nervous system

Everything in moderation is good, and be selective about what, when, and how much you consume.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
