This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been experiencing back pain for a few weeks now, accompanied by neck pain, despite purchasing a new mattress. Additionally, I injured my trapezius muscle during an exercise.

What should I do?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It sounds like you are experiencing multiple issues contributing to your discomfort.

Please review your posture throughout the day for neck and back pain. Poor posture, especially when sitting or standing for extended periods, can exacerbate neck and back pain. Ensure your workspace is ergonomically designed, with your monitor at eye level and your chair providing proper support for your lower back.

Incorporate gentle neck and back stretches to relieve tension. For your neck, side-to-side stretches can be helpful, while for your back, poses like the child's pose or cat-cow stretches can offer relief. Using a heating pad or a warm bath can help relax the muscles in your neck and back, while applying ice may reduce inflammation if swelling is present.

Even though you have purchased a new mattress, it may take time for your body to adjust. Ensure your pillow provides adequate neck support to prevent strain while sleeping. If the mattress is too firm or soft, it might still contribute to your discomfort. Try a mattress topper to adjust its firmness level.

For the trapezius muscle injury sustained during exercise, avoid activities that strain the muscle until it heals. Use ice packs to reduce inflammation and transition to heat therapy to relax the muscles. Gentle stretching and over-the-counter pain relief, if needed, may help.

If your pain persists, please consult a back or physical therapist in person for a thorough assessment and personalized treatment recommendations.

I hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
