Does a bad posture cause cracking joints at a very young age?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 16-year-old suffering from severe back ache. It could possibly be due to bad posture because of carrying a heavy college bag but my knee and ankle joints also crack sometimes when I stand up. Should I be worried about this?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

All these symptoms are due to tightness of the muscles. The crack sound from the back might be due to the unlocking of the facet joints. So, I suggest you follow the instructions mentioned below.

  • Get an X-ray of all the joints of the body as soon as possible.
  • Do a few stretching exercises like biceps stretching, triceps stretching, hamstring and quadriceps stretching, spine rotation, and twisting.
  • Do cat and camel exercises.
  • Also, do neck stretches from side to side, shoulder shrugging exercises, calf muscle stretch, and pectorals stretch.
  • Do static cycling.
  • While lying flat on your back, bend your knees and move the knees as riding a bicycle.
  • Take calcium and drink plenty of water.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk with them, and take medicines with their consent.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
