Patient's Query
Hi doctor, I have sprained my right ankle multiple times quite a few years back and now when I walk long distances, I get a sharp stabbing pain in my ankle. Can you tell me what this is and how to manage it?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
It sounds like you may be experiencing chronic ankle instability or damage as a result of repeated sprains over time. When an ankle is sprained multiple times, the ligaments become weakened or overstretched, making the joint less stable and more prone to further injury. This can lead to ongoing pain, discomfort, and instability, especially with long walks or physical activity. There might be nerve compression or ligament issues, which are giving you trouble. You can do icing and giving rest helps in healing. Doing stretching and strengthening exercises will also strengthen the muscles around the ankle joint. Wear an ankle support brace or orthotics required for supporting the ankle joint. Consult a nearby physical therapist and take ultrasound therapy for a week.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
