Intervertebral discs are present between the vertebrae and are made of a tough outer covering with a soft gel-like center. When this gel-like center comes out of a tear in the disc in the cervical vertebrae, it is called cervical herniated disc. The symptoms include neck pain, shoulder pain, radiating pain to the arm, and tingling or numbness in limbs. Wear and tear caused due to aging can result in a herniated disc. The doctor will first suggest exercise, medications, and other nonsurgical options to relieve the pain. If that does not help, then you might need to undergo spinal fusion surgery or disc replacement surgery.
