Pityriasis rosea is a skin condition that results in large circular spots called the herald patch on the abdomen or back. These spots can measure up to 4 inches in diameter. It usually affects people between the age of 10 and 35. Some people experience headache, fever, sore throat, and tiredness before they develop these spots. The exact cause is not known, but it is believed to be caused due to some strains of the herpes virus, but it is not contagious. It may cause severe itching, and the rash can leave brown spots on healing. Usually, the spots go away on their own in 4 to 10 weeks. Your doctor might prescribe corticosteroids, antihistamines, and antiviral drugs to ease symptoms and to shorten the duration of pityriasis rosea.
